Over the years I’ve had the honor and privilege of working with very talented and terrific actors – and while I normally refrain from mentioning anyone by name, I have to say it was particularly memorable and moving to see Donald and Kiefer Sutherland, father and son in real life, bring these characters, a rigid father and his estranged son, to life on screen.
I endeavored to capture the essence and spirit of the time – the hardship and despair – through the costuming. So I sourced out specific fabrics wherever possible that looked and felt ‘homespun’ and used historic visual reference to inform all of the designs. We further broke down the fabrics to achieve the grittiness and authenticity of this period following the civil war. The amazing landscapes provided a beautiful and moody backdrop for the costumes worn by this talented ensemble cast of actors.
